PRINCIPLES OF LIGHTNING PROTECTION
There are two common mechanisms, which must be considered when the protection of any structure or system is considered. These are the direct and indirect lightning strikes
Direct lightning strikes are by definition those, which strike structures directly. The effects of a direct lightning strike are to raise earth potentials and so diverse current paths to ground are created.
Indirect strikes, or strikes to objects such as distant power lines, adjacent buildings, factories, trees and etc can induce high voltages into incoming services into buildings. These include power lines, coaxial cables, telephone cables and so on.
It is essential that all aspects of lightning protection be considered together as a system. One weakness will make the whole protection system ineffective.
